A strong second-half effort led Joliet Junior College to its sixth straight win to begin the season, a 77-66 victory over Glen Oaks Community College on Saturday afternoon.

JJC opened the third quarter on 9-0 run and never gave up the lead. Sophomore Kianna Campbell finished a traditional 3-point play to highlight the run. Campbell finished with a team-high 19 points.

"She's our engine," coach Shaun Sanderson said. "She's all over the floor literally, offensively, defensively. She sets the tone."

The Wolves (6-0) defense was stingy in the second half, not allowing a point for the first six minutes of the third quarter.

"I thought we were a little bit more disciplined on defense. We had such a slow start," Sanderson said. "We had some key baskets that got us going."

JJC scored the final six points of the quarter including a pair of baskets in the final seconds, the second of which came on a steal and layup by Destiny Villalejo, who finished with 10 points. The baskets gave JJC a nine-point lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Shenia Best had a quality second half scoring nine of her 11 points.

She hit several key shots fueling the Wolves to victory. Her second half is something Sanderson has expected all season.

"We've been waiting on that. We saw her in high school and we thought that's what she was capable of," Sanderson said. "A lot of time she thinks about the game instead of just playing the game. In that stretch, she just played the game."

The Wolves were able to overcome a slow first half which left them trailing by four heading into the break. It looked worse for much of the half, but a 10-0 run tied the game in the second quarter.

JJC will play at Kankakee Community College on Tuesday.
