MADISON, WISC - Joliet Junior College was right with top-seeded Rock Valley for three quarters, but faded in the fourth losing the Region IV Championship game 73-55 on Sunday.
The Wolves finish the season 25-8, achieving the most wins under coach
Shaun Sanderson's 10-year tenure. The veteran head coach was proud of his team.
"These young ladies have nothing to hang their heads about. I told them in the last timeout despite the score they are champions and they represented JJC very well, Sanderson said. "Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way, but we have to working to achieve the ultimate goal."
JJC went on a 10-0 run in the middle of the third quarter to tie the game at 37, but the Golden Eagles answered the Wolves' run with a 10-0 run of their own and never relinquished the lead.
JJC trailed by only five points heading to the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles outscored the Wolves 24-11 in the last quarter to secure the Region IV championship.
Sophomore
Kianna Campbell led JJC with 14 points and three steals.
Talia Edwards had 12 while
Deesha Brefford rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Both Campbell and Brefford were named to the All-Tournament Team.
"It has truly been an honor to coach this team and watch them mature as basketball players and young adults," Sanderson said. "For the sophomores, I am confident they will make an impact on their next team and in life. They are a humble and determined group of individuals. I'm sure they are well prepared for the next level and will make the JJC family proud."
