A slow third quarter ultimately doomed the Joliet women's basketball team on Monday afternoon as the Wolves fell to Minnesota West, 77-68.
After falling behind in the first quarter, the 15th-ranked Wolves (3-3) battled back to enter halftime with a slim lead over the second-ranked LadyJays, 31-30. The momentum didn't continue into the second half, as the LadyJays outscored Joliet 29-9 in the third.
"We let one slip away today," Wolves head coach
Shaun Sanderson said. "We have to be consistent in what we do throughout the entire game and not just moments of the game."
Kiyah Robertson led the Wolves with 20 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block.Â
"I feel as if we are still struggling with our first half energy but in the second half, I feel like we pulled off some good work," Robertson said. "Once I got it in my head that when I get the ball I need to score — everything else came easily."Â
Grace Harris recorded another double-double, scoring 12 points with 11 rebounds. She also had five assists, three steals and a block.
Maggie Grady scored 11 points in the loss.
"This was a tough loss," Harris said. "We had some good moments during the game but it wasn't enough. Our team is still working on staying consistent throughout all four quarters."
In the fourth quarter, the Wolves battled back to outscore the LadyJays, 28-18, but couldn't complete the rally.
"I don't think we played with a sense of urgency to start," Sanderson said. "We did in the fourth quarter when our backs were against the wall, but we got to do that in the beginning."
Joliet will have the week off for the holiday before returning to action on Monday, Nov. 27, when Elmhurst University visits for a 5 p.m. start.
"These couple of losses will motivate our team to come out next week and play harder in the first half," Robertson said.Â
In other news, Harris earned her second Division III Region 4 Player of the Week honor for Week 3 of the season on Monday. Despite dropping two games last week, Harris managed to average 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while being double-teamed.
