Last time the Wolves met Waubonsee, things didn't go the way they hoped.
After opening the season with three straight wins, Joliet stepped onto Waubonsee's court hoping to make it four. Instead, the Chiefs squeaked out a 59-55 victory.
This time it was different.
Meeting for the second time this season on Thursday, and this time on the Wolves' home court, Joliet avenged its earlier loss to Waubonsee in dominant fashion, 84-62.
"Coming in, we knew that team wanted to run," said Wolves head coach
Shaun Sanderson. "We wanted to slow them down, and they did have a couple kids out, so we wanted to put a lot of pressure on the players that are not accustomed to playing. But that's something we're looking to do throughout the entire season."
Kiyah Robertson led the Wolves with 25 points and eight rebounds. She earned 13 trips to the free throw line, sinking seven of those tries.
"I'm feeling great," she said. "I feel like it was a good win; we needed it. We had a bad last game so that showed we worked hard in practice this week to get the win."
Sanderson said he doesn't think there's anybody in the Region that can stop Robertson.
"We tell her nobody can stop her," Sanderson said. "For the most part. She stops herself. People are going to try to get in her head, be physical with her and she's gotta be able to play through that."
The Wolves (5-5) got out to a quick start, taking an early lead and never looking back. By the half, Joliet led Waubonsee, 50-35. Robertson finished the first half with 13 points, with
Grace Harris also adding 13 points in the first 20 minutes.
Scoring came at a premium in the second half for Harris, as she finished the game with just 15 points. She did, however, record four assists and three blocks while finishing with a double-double at 11 total rebounds.Â
"I tend to focus on both offense and defense, and have a full game," Harris said. "If my offense isn't going how I want it to, I start to focus on defense more."
In her debut with Joliet and return to action after an injury,
Ashanti Brown proved to be a factor on the floor for the Wolves, recording 12 points and four assists in the win.Â
"It was great to see her out there on the floor," Sanderson said. "She kind of frees up Grace, because these last few games Grace was seeing like double-teams, triple-teams. We get that extra ball handler that can kind of relieve the pressure from [Harris].
"Once [Browns] gets into game shape, I think they are going to be so much better than they are."
Neither the Wolves nor the Chiefs made much noise offensively in the final quarter, with Joliet outscoring Waubonsee just 14-8.
Faith Domercant finished with 12 points for the Wolves.Â
The Wolves hit the road for a long stretch, with the first stop being Monday, Dec. 11 at Benedictine University for a 5:30 p.m. tip off. Joliet won't return home until after the New Year.Â
