The streak is over.
After winning six straight games, Joliet's hopes to make it seven fell short as the Wolves were out muscled by Rock Valley on Thursday, 90-59.
The Wolves (10-9) entered halftime down by 21 and trailed by as much as 39 points at one point in the second half.
"I don't have any answers for that," head coach Danny Turner said following the game. "We were on a six-game winning streak and we just came out flat. We didn't stick to the game plan. We wanted to anticipate well out of our 1-3-1, we wanted to play angles and rebound from our spots, but they were just quicker. They got to the 50-50 balls right off the jump and were more aggressive than we were."
Joliet was done in by turnovers and a poor shooting performance throughout the game. In the first half. the Wolves gave up 10 turnovers but ended with just 11. The team shot just 27 percent from the floor, going 21-of-77 with a 10-of-32 mark from the three.Â
"Our goal is to be minus ten," Turner said. "We had that on the board in our pregame talk. We've been averaging about 13, 14 turnovers a game -- here we had 10 turnovers in the first half. We just have to take better care of the basketball and make better decisions with it."
Comparatively, Rock Valley committed just three turnovers and and shot 48 percent from the floor, making 30 of their 62 tries. They also converted 19-of-24 trips to the foul line.
Eric Troutman led the Wolves, scoring 17 points and finishing with four assists and two rebounds.
Romello Ali scored 12 points with three rebounds and two steals.
"We could have come out with better energy and more defense," Troutman said. "We just came out slow, honestly.
He continued, saying that they hit about 10 corner threes on Joliet and that is something the Wolves needed to take away from Rock Valley.Â
"Just need to forget about this one," said
Alex Vassilakis, who finished with five rebounds and three assists as well as three turnovers. "Work on our defense, continue to practice and be better for the next game. ... I feel like we were just careless with the ball, including myself."
The Wolves will look to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday, January 20 at 3 p.m. when Joliet hosts Harper College.
