The Wolves jump out to a 5-1 lead after the first two innings, but the Joliet Junior College baseball team could not maintain that momentum as they fell Thursday to Oakton College, 10-6.
In the first inning, the Wolves (18-27) scored when
Mason Heitzler hit a ground ball and reached on an error at second base that allowed him to reach second and push
Dylan Scafuri to third with Zach Tarrant scoring. Oakton scored a run in the second before the Wolves added four runs to the total.
Mitch Thomas hit a line drive to left field for a double, advancing
Jonny Carrera and Dylan Strode home and pushing
Matt Klaess to third. Klaess would score during the next at-bat when Tarrant ground out. Another ground out by Scafuri let Thomas reach home.Â
While Oakton added two runs in the top of the third while the Wolves were held scoreless in the third and fourth.
Oakton took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 6-5 lead. The Wolves answered, when Carrera hit a fly ball to to center field to push
Hobbs Dunne home to even the tally.
Oakton responded, scoring three runs in the sixth and another in the eighth while shutting out the Wolves the rest of the way. Both teams recorded 12 hits on the day.Â
Thomas led the offense, going 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBI's and was walked twice. Tarrant was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Scafuri finished 1 for 5 with an RBI. Carrera went 2 for 3 with an RBI as well.
Connor Bird took the loss for JJC after pitching one inning in which he allowed three runs and one hit with a walk and a strikeout.
George Limacher had the start for the Wolves, pitching the first five innings and allowing six runs off nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts.Â
Matt Medlin pitched 1.1 innings, allowing a pair of hits and a run with two strikeouts. Anthony Rizzo also appeared, throwing 1.2 innings in which he struck out two and walked one.
The Wolves are back in action Friday at Elgin Communtiy College at 3 p.m.
