After falling behind in the first half, the Joliet Junior College women's soccer team battled back as the Wolves earned a 2-2 draw with Moraine Valley Community College on Saturday.

The Wolves (4-4-1) stuck first when sophomore forward Jalyssa Villafuerte found the back of the net in the sixth minute with an assist from Cara Planeta.

Joliet held the 1-0 advantage until the 25th minute, when Moraine Valley found success and evened the tally. Ten minutes later, Moraine Valley struck once more to take a 2-1 lead that they held into the break.

"I think we played good," said Wolves coach Henry Cheung. "We came out in the first half and executed our plan. We knew they have a very good player -- number 18 -- so we shut her down. She's the leading scorer for the team. We scored early but then we made some mistakes in the back but we fixed it in the second half."

In the 70th minute, Villafeurte scored the equalizer for the Wolves to make it 2-2 with help from Gloria Barrios.

Cheung said his team just "want it more."

"I think if you're looking at the stats, we dominated the possession, the shots on goal, everything," he said. "What changed second half I think is the players. We had the same starting lineup but I think the players just want it more than the other team. This game is all about the player. They make the difference on the field and I'm very proud of them."

Sophomore midfielder Monica Zavala said the team's focus on Moraine Valley's leading scorer in the first half opened the Wolves up to mistakes, but they corrected course after halftime.

"Ultimately, we relaxed and ended up controlling the game in the second half by trusting in each other and playing how we know we can play," Zavala said. "We stepped up and we wanted it enough to get that third goal -- that winning goal -- but we just couldn't completely finish. We did everything we could and we all played together very well."

The Wolves finished with 13 shots on goal to Moraine Valley's nine.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Schlismann made three saves while freshman counterpart Mikayla Adrieansen saved four of the six she faced.

"The team came out really good in the second half and they were motivated," said Cheung. "The worked hard and didn't give up. A lot of teams would just give up down, 1-2, but this team is special and we all saw that."

Next up, the Wolves travel to College of DuPage on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. match.
