Wolves softball captures Region 4 crown

JJC defeats College of DuPage in best-of-3 tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLEN ELLYN, Ill. — The Wolves sit atop the region once more as Joliet Junior College captured the Region 4 championship Friday over College of DuPage in a best-of-3 series.

"Very proud of this team and the way they continue to battle and find ways to win," said Wolves coach Emily Marino. "It was a great team effort against a tough team."

The Wolves took the first game, 13-3, in five innings. Pitcher Arianna Jentel (10-12) earned the win after pitching the full game, allowing nine hits, three earned runs and striking out one. 

Lauren Pell led the way for the Wolves' offense, going 3-of-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI's. Skylar Welcome went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a double. Samantha Rios and Katie Johnske each recorded a hit and two RBI's apiece, with Johnske's hit being a double.

The Wolves took the second game, 6-4. Tied a 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Lea Herkel singled to push two runs home for the final. She finished with two hits in the game. Coach Marino called her single "clutch."

Pell finished 3-of-4 with two RBI's and Rios went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a double.

Welcome (3-1) earned the win after an inning pitched while Jentel earned the save, allowing one hit in an inning of work.

"Ari Jentel was outstanding on the mounds," said Marino. "Katie Johnske had some great at-bats and hits."

Five Wolves earned All-Region honors following the conclusion of the tournament: With the victory, the Wolves improve to 28-24 on the season and will be off this week. They travel to North Dakota for the District Championship later this month for a chance to reach the NJCAA Division III Softball World Series.
