Softball sweeps day to reach Final Four

DEWITT, New York — Joliet Junior College softball bounced back Thursday as the Wolves swept the day to reach the Final Four of the NJCAA Division III World Series. 

The Wolves took the first game, beating Suffolk County Community College, 4-2. Averi Jury (15-2) pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs. On offense, Jury went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Lea Herkel went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Skylar Welcome set a new school career record by recording her 113th RBI. She went 2-for-4 with a run scored in reaching the new record.

The Wolves didn't let up, taking the second game in five innings over Corning College, 13-3. Dani Chorak (5-1) pitched four innings in which she allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out a pair.

Herkel powered the offense, going 4-for-4 in the game good for two doubles, a triple, three RBI's and three runs scored. Jury also made some noise, going 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Samantha Rios finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Karli McMillin also went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI's and two runs.

The Wolves (43-14) are now 2-1 at the World Series and have forced a rematch with Patrick & Henry College on Friday at 4 p.m. CST. With a win, the Wolves would then face Caldwell College at 6 p.m. CST for a chance to reach the championship round on Saturday.
