The Wolves overcame a slow start Saturday as the Joliet Junior College women's basketball team secured its first win of the season, 81-53, over Governors State (JV).
Sophomore
Kiyah Robertson powered the Wolves (1-0) with 32 points and 11 total rebounds, shooting 46-percent (12 of 26) with an 8 of 11 mark at the foul line.
Entering the first game of the season, she said she had no nerves.
"Last night I came into the gym and put in work," Robertson said. "I kept telling myself it's all in my head; anything I want I could get so I just came out here and showed that."
The Wolves and visiting Jaguars got off to a slow start, as both teams finished the opening quarter tied, 8-8. JJC stepped on the gas pedal and outscored the Jaguars 23-8 in the second quarter to lead at the half, 31-16.
Wolves coach
Shaun Sanderson credited the development of the offense aiding on the defensive end.
"We try to make everyone accountable," said Sanderson. "We try to develop their offensive skills so they can score and give us a couple seconds to be able to defend. I thought they played with a lot of energy."
The Wolves kept it up in the second half on their way to the win.
Demi Page finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Joyce Tua-Link recorded 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
JJC finished 26 of 67 on the night with a 50-percent mark from the three. Governors State relied heavily on the three-point shot, finishing just 7 of 27 from beyond the arc.
"They gave up a couple open three point shots but we'll get better at it," Sanderson said.
Sanderson saw a lot of good things in the first game of the season.
"I thought our communication was good and I thought our spacing was good as well," he said. "In the first half, we missed a lot of layups but we'll get better with that. It's the first home game so everything doesn't always go your way."
Next up for the Wolves is a trip to Kishwaukee College on Tuesday for a 5:15 p.m. tip.
