Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Devin Jones

Women's basketball falls to MATC, 72-62

The Joliet Junior College women's basketball team had a tough battle at home Monday night as they fell 72–62 to Milwaukee Area Technical College after a late fourth quarter surge by the Stormers.

JJC trailed 33–30 at halftime before responding with a strong third quarter, outscoring MATC 18–12 to take a 48–45 lead heading into the final quarter. However, the Wolves were unable to hold off MATC's late push, as the Stormers closed the game out with a 27-point fourth quarter to seal the win.

Head coach Shaun Sanderson credited his team's effort but pointed to rebounding and shot selection as key factors in the outcome.

"Rebounding, we don't have much size, but rebounding is about heart and desire, and we didn't do that today," Sanderson said. "I also thought we took ill-advised shots, and in a close game like this, we have to run our plays and get to our spots. It bit us in the end."

Sophomore guard Des McGruder echoed her coach's message, noting the team's need to be more physical on the boards.

"Definitely our rebounding and boxing out," McGruder said. "They got a lot of offensive boards, and we didn't, that played a really big part in them winning."

With the defeat, JJC Women's Basketball falls to 3–1 on the season and will look to bounce back when they travel to face Waubonsee Community College on Thursday.
