Joliet Junior College (JJC) is celebrating statewide recognition for its partnership with the Joliet Community YMCA after the organizations' Junior Wolves program was named a finalist for the 2026 Governor's Hometown Award. The recognition highlights innovative collaborations that strengthen communities through service, volunteerism and community engagement.
Representatives from JJC and the YMCA traveled to Springfield in August to present the program as one of three finalists for the Governor's Cup, the top honor awarded through the Governor's Hometown Awards program.
"This recognition is a tremendous honor for our partnership and reflects the impact the Junior Wolves program has had on local youth and families in a short period of time," said Gregg Braun, JJC director of athletics. "We're grateful for our partnership with the Greater Joliet Area YMCA and proud of the commitment our student-athletes, coaches and staff have shown in helping connect the community with our campus and create new opportunities for young people."
Launched in February 2025, the partnership between JJC and the YMCA expanded youth sports, mentorship and educational outreach opportunities by bringing YMCA programming to JJC's Main Campus. Through the Junior Wolves program, local youth participate in year-round sports leagues, camps and activities while interacting with JJC student-athletes, coaches and staff.
The collaboration also includes the Paws on the Street initiative, which connects JJC student-athletes with youth through mentorship opportunities at local schools and YMCA programs. Together, the organizations are helping young people build confidence, develop leadership skills and become familiar with a college environment at an early age.
Programs hosted on campus have introduced hundreds of young people and their families to the College while reinforcing JJC's commitment to serving as a community hub for learning, wellness and opportunity.
The Governor's Hometown Awards, administered through Serve Illinois, recognize outstanding community service projects that improve the quality of life in Illinois communities through innovation, collaboration and volunteerism.
